Emporium Disguised as an Estate Agent
The Emporium is a not-for-profit community gallery that was established a year ago in Stokes Croft using a reclaimed building which had previously stood derelict for over 25 years. The space now welcomes exhibitions, meetings, workshops, etc. and is open to all.
Their latest exhibition, which has just finished, consisted of two parts. The first being the ‘People for places’ installation and the second ‘Emporium @ the Emporium’.
‘PEOPLE FOR PLACES’
To raise awareness about the number of vacant properties in Bristol, nearly 7000 apparently, the facade of the Emporium was decorated to mimic an estate agency, but instead of advertising properties to let or buy, its listings only contained abandoned buildings.

‘EMPORIUM @ THE EMPORIUM’
To celebrate their anniversary and also as part of the Bristol Co-Munity, the Emporium founders organised a show featuring some top name artists, including: Andy Council, Tim Floyd, Reginald Falcon, Studio Amour, Sam Marsh, Lulu, Wendy Wainwright, Gary Powell, Mike Powell, Lucy Cavendish, Sven Zimviction, Rowdy, Tom Groves and Billy Macrae.

‘Talking up the Croft’
Coincidentally another project has been going on in Stokes Croft which shares a similar theme to the ‘People for places’ exhibition. Organised by the PRSC team, it aims to highlight the number of buildings that are currently in-occupied in Stokes Croft through the use of paste-ups have been directly applied to their facades. The paste-ups offer information regarding the current state of the property as well as its possible future use.

Brilliant Ideas from’Emporium’ and ‘People’s republic of Stokes Croft’…too many buildings are left vacant and eventually turn to ruins when their owners don’t upkeep them…so unfair when many people are homeless :(
Good on these people for reducing the waste!
I love exploring abandoned buildings and am planning to move from NZ to Bristol next year-
would be great to meet up with more abandoned house enthusiasts through groups like this.
